What does it mean to be a globally aware and culturally sensitive human being? There is no better way to find the answer to this question than to immerse yourself in a different culture, whether here in the United States or abroad. Our Global Citizenship Forum held this past Monday in the theater revealed the depth of learning that comes from taking a risk and traveling to a foreign land to experience and learn from others. Our students and faculty did good works for others on their travels but they also learned a great deal from those they met along the way. This is, in fact, the point. We need to become more culturally sensitive, more comfortable around difference, and appreciate what others can teach us. Our Global Citizenship Forum and work with Students Shoulder to Shoulder is the beginning of our important work in the area. I am grateful to Lydia Maier and all of the brave souls who ventured out this summer and are leading the way for the rest of us.
